Senator Evan Bayh today announced that Indiana will receive nearly $2.2 million in economic recovery funds to support energy efficient transit and conservation programs in Lafayette.
The Department of Transportation grants, part of the Transit Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction (TIGGER) initiative, will support the Greater Lafayette Public Transportation Corporation's (GLPTC) efforts to reduce its electrical energy usage. Specifically, the funding will be used to invest in renewable sources of energy generated by wind turbines.
"This economic recovery funding will create middle-class jobs for Hoosiers, lessen our dependence on oil, and take another important step towards building a greener economy in Lafayette," said Bayh.
Currently, the primary use of electrical energy by GLPTC is at its garage and maintenance facilities. The funding will be used to install wind turbine units on GLPTC premises and will provide a significant amount of the total electrical energy used by CityBus in Greater Lafayette.
